The Retro Communication Experience - there ain't no party like a Butlins Party!

Tuesday, 15 March 2011

"Head to Butlins for a weekend of edgy alternative sounds…" seems like something of an oxymoron. The name Butlins is one which very few people would dare place alongside the word 'edgy' - unless they're describing how a week spent in a 1970's prefab cabin camp surrounded by screaming children would make them feel.

But these days there seems to be a shift taking place. Last weekend a member of the Undercurrent team spent a weekend in a Butlins (all in the name of Live Communications Experiences) but instead of out of control families and wailing kiddy-winkles, he was surrounded by out of control young hipsters and several function 1 sound systems playing what can only be described as cutting edge electronic music.

Butlins and Pontyns are finding a solid second life as venues for all kinds of events, most of them music based, and most of them drippingly cool.

Buts

And of course it's not just venues that are cashing in on, and fuelling, the desire for retro fun harking back to a more innocent time but firmly injected with a modern sense of hedonism.

No one could have missed the Burlesque explosion over the last 12 months or so, or the revival of rockabilly, and these sorts of strongly themed club nights and purpose built retro venues are still growing. Just two weeks ago the super-club Matter in Greenwich was re-launched as Proud 2, a retro chic venue with a focus on Burlesque. The phenomenon continues.

From an experiential company's point of view, both these trends are extremely positive.

For any live communication experience we create, we want to totally own the space, and build a completely unique environment unlike the world outside. It's important to transport the guests to somewhere fun, and exciting, and intricate. Holding an event in a holiday camp gives us an event space that can be totally controlled, and more opportunities for those subtle, immersive touches that are so delightful.

And organising an event with a strong retro theme, especially something as striking as Burlesque, maintains the opportunities for transporting people to a time and a place totally removed from their everyday lives. Where better to really hit home with a brands key messages…

So big firms out there, why not consider doing your summer party in your own special world, and shipping all your staff off to a Butlins for a night? Or brands with an eye on trends and a desire to go to town on the fine details that make an event special, immerse yourselves in the retro chic environment of a hedonistic speakeasy, complete with Burlesque entertainment, cocktails in tea-cups, and all the little touches that make a party utterly memorable.

Anything is possible, and we'd be happy to arrange it for you!
